Treasure Island has for 16 years provided out of school and summer day-camp programs in Burnaby, BC, Canada. With over 30 years experience, Agi Fejer and her staff offer year-round kindergarten and school-age activities and programs, including Cooking/Baking, Movement (basic gymnastics skills), Hands-on Science, weekly Baseball, Acting and Talent Show events, weekly Field Trips and monthly visits to the Library. Arts and Crafts sessions are conducted daily, as is their daily outdoor program for the healthy development of children. Twice a month Treasure Island holds its “Smart and Safe” program, teaching kids through conversation and role-play how to stay safe and healthy in real life situations.
Agi adds, however, that sessions, activities and events are not the entire program at Treasure Island. “A big part of our method is to teach our children to actively learn and use social skills such as negotiation, problem solving, self-promotion and discussion. We actively train them to use these skills through situational games and mental exercises. This unique feature of our daily operations typically by grade one trains our children to solve most of their social negotiation amongst themselves.”
Treasure Island operates under the principle that all these skills are developed by focusing on traditional methods and limiting the use of electronic games to the bare minimum in their centers.
